Dr./Professor Edward Tien-zen Lee, Ph.D., 73 years old, of Poway, California, passed away peacefully on February 11, 2020. He was a resident of Quiet Hills, with his own, private sunlit room.
Edward was born to Dr./Professor C.Y. Lee and Mrs. F.T. Chang Lee in China. His chosen birthdate was April 16, 1946. The entire family eventually moved to Taiwan. Growing up, he was an outstanding student. His grades were so excellent that he was granted admission to National Taiwan University without needing to take an admission test. He completed his Electrical Engineering degree. He went onto complete his Masters and Ph.D. degrees at University of California in Berkeley in Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences. Continuing the theme of academic achievement, he became a full-time professor. He taught Computer Engineering at different U.S. universities, including UC Berkeley, Memphis State University, Louisiana State University, University of Miami, and San Diego. He co-authored more than 100 academic publications during his career, including book chapters and journal articles, mostly regarding the topic of computer science. He retired after a long career of teaching in San Diego, CA. He was a beloved member of his church, and a devoted Christian. His hobbies included telling jokes and memorizing/reciting long passages of scripture (another example of his remarkable memory). Although tone-deaf, he loved to sing. He also loved eating delicious food, especially Chinese food. His passion, enthusiasm, and enjoyment were evident in all the activities he loved to do.
Edward is survived by his six siblings: William, Agnes, Samuel, Jane, Wei-Ming (in Taipei), and Julie. He is survived by his three children: Edna, Madonna, and Eddy. There are too many nieces, nephews, and cousins to list individually, but they all have fond memories of “Uncle Edward.” He was known to be kind and generous to his family and church-family. The family and friends of Edward wish to thank everyone for their prayers, thoughts, memories, and continued love and support.
The memorial service will be held at his church – House of Praise Evangelical (HOPE) Church of San Diego in Encinitas, California, on February 29th, Saturday, 4pm. There will be a dinner banquet to follow at a nearby location. He wanted people to celebrate his life after his death, which included making sure that this gathering would include food. California Funeral Alternatives will be taking care of arrangements for cremation, as well as scattering of his ashes.
